This site is the former site of the Babri Masjid built in the sixteenth century . Statues of Ram and Sita were installed in the mosque in 1949, before it was attacked and destroyed in 1992. [6] [7] [8] 2019 Supreme Court decision on Ayodhya dispute announced that the disputed land will be donated to the Hindu community for the construction of the temple, while Muslims will be given land in nearby Dhannipur for the construction of the mosque. The Court referred to a report of the Archaeological Survey of India , which suggested the presence of an un-Islamic structure beneath the demolished Babri Masjid.

On August 5, 2020, Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi performed Bhoomi Pujan to start the construction of Ram Temple. On January 22, 2024, Modi ji played the chief host in the ritual of Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha ( Abhishek ).
The temple has been embroiled in several controversies due to alleged misuse of donations, sidelining of its key employees and politicization by the Bharatiya Janata Party

History
ancient and medieval
Ram is a Hindu god who is considered an incarnation of Vishnu . According to the ancient Indian epic, Ramayana , Rama was born in Ayodhya. [17]

In the 16th century, Babur attacked and destroyed the temple in his series of attacks on temples throughout northern India. [18] Later, the Mughals built a mosque, the Babri Masjid , which is considered to be the site of Ram's birthplace, Ram Janmabhoomi. [19] The earliest record of the mosque dates back to 1767, in the Latin book Descriptio India, written by the Jesuit missionary Joseph Tiefenthaler . According to him, the mosque was built by destroying the Ramkot temple, which is considered to be Ram's fort in Ayodhya, and Bedi, where Ram's birthplace is located. [20]

The first incident of religious violence was recorded in 1853 [21] In December 1858, the British administration banned Hindus from holding pujas (rituals) at the disputed site. A stage was built outside the mosque to conduct the rituals. [22]

Modern Era
On the night of 22–23 December 1949, the idols of Ram and Sita were installed inside the Babri Masjid and devotees started gathering from the next day. [23] [24] By 1950, the state took control of the mosque under Section 145 of the CrPC and allowed Hindus, not Muslims, to worship at the place. [25]

In the 1980s, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), affiliated with the Sangh Parivar , a Hindu nationalist family , started a new movement to reclaim the site for Hindus and build a temple dedicated to the infant Ram (Ram Lalla) at this location. Did. VHP started collecting bricks and money with " Jai Shri Ram " written on them. Later, the government led by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi gave permission to VHP to proceed for the foundation stone laying, with then Home Minister Buta Singh formally giving permission to VHP leader Ashok Singhal . Initially, the Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh had agreed that the foundation stone would be laid outside the disputed site. However, on 9 November 1989, a group of VHP leaders and sadhus laid the foundation stone by digging a 200-litre (7-cubic-foot) pit next to the disputed land. The lion gate of the sanctum sanctorum was built there. [26] After this, VHP laid the foundation of a temple on the land adjacent to the disputed mosque. On 6 December 1992, the VHP and the Bharatiya Janata Party organized a rally at the site involving 150,000 volunteers, known as Karsevaks. The rally turned violent, the crowd overpowered the security forces and demolished the mosque . [27] [28]

The demolition of the mosque resulted in several months of inter-communal violence between India's Hindu and Muslim communities , resulting in the deaths of an estimated 2,000 people in Bombay (now Mumbai ) and riots throughout the Indian subcontinent . [29] A day after the demolition of the mosque, on 7 December 1992, The New York Times reported that more than 30 Hindu temples across Pakistan were attacked, some set on fire and one demolished. Hindu temples were also attacked in Bangladesh . [30]

On 5 July 2005, five terrorists attacked the makeshift Ram temple at the site of the destroyed Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. All five were killed in the ensuing encounter with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), while a civilian was killed in a grenade attack by the attackers to breach the siege wall. The CRPF suffered three casualties, two of whom were seriously injured with multiple bullet wounds.

Two archaeological excavations conducted by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in 1978 and 2003 found evidence that the remains of a Hindu temple existed at the site. [33] [34] Archaeologist KK Muhammad accused several left-leaning historians of undermining the findings. [35] Over the years, various title and legal disputes occurred, such as the passage of the Acquisition of Certain Area in Ayodhya Act in 1993. Only after the Supreme Court's decision on the Ayodhya dispute in 2019, it was decided that the disputed land would be handed over to the trust formed by the Government of India for the construction of Ram Temple. The trust was eventually formed under the name of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra . On 5 February 2020, it was announced in the Parliament of India that the Government of India had accepted the plan for the construction of the temple. Two days later, on 7 February, five acres of land was allotted to build 22 new mosques in Dhannipur village away from Ayodhya
architect
The original design of the Ram Temple was prepared by the Sompura family of Ahmedabad in 1988. [38] Sompura has contributed to the design of over 100 temples across the world for at least 15 generations, including the Somnath Temple . [39] The chief architect of the temple was Chandrakant Sompura, assisted by his two sons, Nikhil Sompura and Ashish Sompura, who are also architects. [40] A new design, with some changes from the original, was prepared by Sompura in 2020, [41] according to Hindu texts, Vastu Shastra and Shilpa Shastra . [42] The temple will be 250 feet wide, 380 feet long and 161 feet (49 m) high. [43] Once completed, the temple complex will be the third largest Hindu temple in the world. [41] It is designed in the Gurjara -Chalukya style of Nagara style architecture , a type of Hindu temple architecture found primarily in northern India. [44] A model of the proposed temple was displayed during the Prayag Kumbh Mela in 2019. [45] The main structure of the temple will be built on a three-storey high platform. There will be five pavilions in the middle of the sanctum sanctorum and at the entrance . Three mandaps on one side will be for Kudu, dance and colour, and two mandaps on the other side will be for kirtan and prayer . In Nagara style the pavilions are decorated with shikharas. [46] [47]

The building will have a total of 366 columns. The pillars will each have 16 idols including incarnations of Shiva , 10 Dashavatara , 64 Chausath Yoginis and 12 incarnations of Goddess Saraswati . The width of the stairs will be 16 feet (4.9 m). As per the design of temples dedicated to Vishnu , the sanctum sanctorum will be octagonal. [48] The temple will be built on 10 acres (0.040 km 2 ), and 57 acres (0.23 km 2 ) of land will be used for a prayer hall, a lecture hall, an educational facility and other facilities including a museum and a cafeteria. Will be developed in one complex. [49] According to the temple committee, more than 70,000 people will be able to visit the site. [50] Larsen & Toubro offered to oversee the design and construction of the temple free of charge, and became the contractor for the project. [51] [52] The Central Building Research Institute , National Geophysical Research Institute and the IITs of Bombay , Guwahati and Madras are assisting in areas such as soil testing , concrete and design.

The construction work will be completed with Rs 600,000 sandstone obtained from Bansi , Rajasthan .  There would be no use of iron in the construction of the temple and ten thousand copper plates would be required to join the stone blocks. In a culturally significant move, Thailand is also symbolically contributing to the inauguration of the Ram temple by sending soil to the Ram Janmabhoomi , building on its earlier gesture of sending water from two rivers of Thailand to honor the temple.
